Baylor signee Nick Lewis struck out 12 batters and Logan Sepanek drove in four runs as state-ranked Marcus beat longtime rival, Lewisville, 8-2 on Friday for its 16th-straight win.
Lewis, who was making his fourth varsity start, allowed three hits and at one point retired 11-straight batters. Sepanek put Marcus on the board in the bottom of the third inning when he drilled a liner to the left field wall for a two-run double. With his team leading 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Sepanek put another two runs on the board with a two-out single.
Marcus (16-1, 2-0 in District 5-5A) is No. 3 in the latest Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 5A state poll and heads into next week’s slate of games tied atop the district standings with Flower Mound (16-3, 2-0). They’ll travel to Coppell on Tuesday and host the Jaguars on Friday.
“If we start worrying about if we are ranked or that we are 16-1, we are going to get beat in the next game,” Marcus coach Jeff Sherman said. “We’ve played some great teams along the way, and Coppell is going to be hungry. But we aren’t going to be scared to go up against anyone. We want to get better.”
Marcus came into Friday’s game having no hit Denton Ryan on Tuesday. Lewisville (10-6, 0-2) was held hitless until the fifth inning when it eventually plated its first run. The Marauders, on the other hand, squeezed out eight hits and managed to chase the Farmers’ starting pitcher, Brian Deaver, late in the fourth inning. After Sepanek drove in the first two runs in the third, Deaver was called for a balk to force in another run. The next batter he faced, Matt Holcombe, ripped a sacrifice fly for the 4-0 lead.
Marcus scored two more runs to take a 6-0 lead early in the fourth inning off an error at first base and a passed ball, respectively. Deaver was pulled three batters later and replaced by Jason Foley. Sepanek then drilled his two-run single to increase the lead to 8-0.

Another red hot team in District 5-5A are the Jaguars, who beat Coppell 4-2 on Friday for their sixth win in a row. Flower Mound (16-3) is tied atop the league standings with Marcus heading into Tuesday’s away game against Hebron. Flower Mound took the lead for good over Coppell in the fifth when Casey Jacobson doubled and later scored on a throwing error.
Guyer 7, Byron Nelson 2
Guyer is the lone first place team in District 5-4A following its 7-2 win over Byron Nelson on Friday. The Wildcats are a perfect 3-0; Cole Wessling homered and Reid Battles tripled in the win. Guyer (7-11 overall) has won two in a row for only the second time this season.
