Sports Roundup: Guyer softball suffers rare loss; Marcus’ Conner Dotson throws no hitter in win over Denton Ryan

Byron Nelson pitcher Ashley Dumoulin struck out five batters and held Guyer to just two hits in a key 3-0 win on Tuesday in District 5-4A action.
Guyer (14-2-1, 2-1) came in riding a nine-game win streak and was averaging 7.66 runs during that stretch. But Dumoulin — who had a no hitter against Lake Dallas on Friday — didn’t give up a hit after the first inning and dealt the Wildcats their first shutout of the year. Nelson (14-6, 2-1) and Guyer now share identical league records with Wichita Falls Rider heading into Thursday’s slate of games. All three sit behind Brewer (3-0) in the standings.
Nelson will host Wichita Falls Rider while Guyer plays Lake Dallas.
“They were better than us … their hitting was better, their pitching was better and their defense was better,” Guyer coach Keith Medford said. “Their pitcher was outstanding; mine was good too. We knew we were going to have our hands full with Ashley. We just didn’t hit the ball.”
The lack of offense overshadowed an otherwise decent performance from Guyer pitcher Shayne Starkey. Starkey got the nod over ace Suzette Palmer; striking out three and holding Nelson scoreless through the first two innings of play.
But Nelson squeezed out two runs in the top of the third inning when first basemen Dani West drilled a two-run double with no outs. Starkey pitched out of the jam with three straight outs, but Guyer’s offense simply couldn’t back her up. Nelson plated its final run one inning later on an error.
Guyer finished with two errors, both in the fourth inning, and only managed three baserunners in the final six innings.
BASEBALL UPDATE
Marcus 8, Denton Ryan 1
Conner Dotson threw a no hitter on Tuesday as Marcus beat Denton Ryan 8-1 in the District 5-5A opener for both teams. Dotson struck out 15 batters, giving up just one unearned run. Marcus (15-1) has won 15 in a row and will face longtime rival Lewisville on Friday.
“We know we are 15-1 right now, but we just need to stay humble and keep playing pitch by pitch,” Marcus coach Jeff Sherman said. “It helps when you have pitchers that command the zone, and that’s what Conner did for us tonight. We just have to keep it going.”
Flower Mound 6, Lewisville 2
Tim Millard had one of five extra base hits for Flower Mound, including a home run, in a 6-2 win over Lewisville in the District 5-5A opener for both teams. Flower Mound (15-3 overall, 1-0 in district) is riding a five-game win streak into Friday’s home game against Coppell.
Guyer 11, Denton 2
Guyer pounded out 11 runs on just as many hits to throttle Denton, 11-2. The Wildcats (6-11 overall) are now 2-0 in District 5-4A. Denton managed three hits against pitcher Jud Kinzy. Reid Battles homered while Domenic Pickering and Tristan Brown each doubled for Guyer.
